Update of Algorithms

A great deal of effort is being made into improving algorithms for integrating ODEs and DAEs. Often these are refinements of existing algorithms rather than completely new algorithms. It is not a case of there being a single DASSL algorithm, a single Gear’s method, etc. but rather a series of versions, each a significant improvement on the previous one. In addition there are variants designed for specialist applications.

When these algorithms are used in simulation software such as Simcenter Amesim, it is necessary to do a considerable amount of work adapting and tailoring the algorithms to suit the software. Hence the DASSL and LSODA employed in Simcenter Amesim are highly modified.

It is attended to make major upgrades in integration algorithms at intervals of 2 to 3 years. This strategy gives continuity and allows time to fully adapt new algorithms before they are released. Between major releases there will be a continuous process of improvement of existing algorithms.
