How to engage?

Users confronted with the need to carry out 1D/3D co-simulation between Simcenter Amesim and a given CFD software package have two main courses of action at their disposal.

User sets up co-simulation interface

This mainly depends on the user’s know-how with regards to scripting, and knowledge of third-party CFD packages. As shown in this guide, setting the interface up correctly is a multi-step process, and depending on the complexity of the use case, may require technical expertise both in 1D and 3D CFD simulation.

If the user feels at ease handling IT related topics such as:

  • Controlling DLLs using scripts with dedicated APIs,

  • Software installation,

  • Licensing aspects

  • CPU architecture and OS-related compatibility aspects,

  • Compiler configuration,

  • etc.

... then setting up the interface is feasible directly. This also depends on the availability of a CFD expert who could trouble-shoot and solve any issues that may arise.

Note

It is always recommended to be in direct contact with the CFD tool vendor – they may have essential advice regarding the interface, and how to set it up on the CFD side.

Co-simulation interface is set up by Siemens PLM

Siemens PLM has some experience with this kind of project. Such a feasibility task can be subcontracted to Siemens PLM. Typical tasks in such a project are:

  • partitioning of a coupled model

  • definition of exchanged variables and boundary conditions

  • stability analysis and choice of time step

  • computer implementation and various compilation issues

This type of feasibility work is done with a simple Simcenter Amesim model coupled to a simple CFD model. A more complete approach would imply a complex Simcenter Amesim model coupled to a complex CFD model to be representative of the real system the customer wants to study, with full validation of the obtained results.   At the end of such a project, Siemens PLM would carry out a knowledge transfer on the customer’s site so that the customer will be able to get the configuration for running the Simcenter Amesim/CFD co-simulation on his machines.
