Question

How can I use the FlexNet Publisher borrowing functionality with Simcenter Amesim?

Answer

FlexNet Publisher has the ability to allow a floating license to be borrowed by a system which will subsequently be disconnected from the network. The resulting license can be used until the specified return date and time, and is checked back in automatically at the end of this time. In addition, you can return the borrowed license back to the license pool earlier if this is desired.

Note

The borrowing functionality is NOT compatible with token-based licenses.

How to start the borrowing

Procedure

  1. Make sure that you are connected to the network. In order to check the connection between the server and your local machine, use the ping command in a DOS console: ping servername

Note The maximum number of borrowing days allowed is 120.

  1. Open the LMTOOLS utility and switch to the Borrowing tab.

  2. Enter a Return Date and a Return Time.

  3. Press the Set Borrow Expiration button:

Note Alternatively, you can set the Borrow Expiration date and time through the command prompt, using lmborrow. For example, set LM_BORROW=5-jan-2020:ugslmd:25-jan-2020:13:00.

  1. Start Simcenter Amesim and check the version that you have started.

  2. For simplicity, we suggest to create a copy of your model that includes ALL libraries that you plan to re-use offline during the borrowing period, and store it in a folder named Models

    Borrowing_model for example:

  3. Open the model and run it.

Stop the run before the end if the run is likely to be very long:

  1. Close Simcenter Amesim.

  2. After closing Simcenter Amesim, click Don’t Borrow Anymore Today on the LMTOOLS Borrowing tab.

You can also do this through the command line using lmborrow: lmutil lmborrow -clear.

Listing Borrowed licenses

You can display a list of borrowed licenses by clicking List Currently Borrowed Features:

How to return a borrowed license Before or After the expiration date

Procedure

  1. Reconnect your local machine to the network.

  2. Start lmtools.

  3. Go to the Borrowing tab.

  4. Enter the Feature Name to return along with the Display Name (optional).

  5. Press the Return Borrowed Licenses Early button and check that the log confirms that the feature has been successfully returned.

Note

This action is also necessary for borrowed licenses returned after the expiration date. You can also do this through the command line using lmborrow. For example, lmutil lmborrow -return -c 28000@ -d lms_il_ame_01.

At this stage, you are sure that the borrowing period has ended, and the server is now aware that you are back, so it no longer reserves borrowing features for you.
