The aim of CAD Import > Analyze a simple CAD file

Build the system

The CAD file represents an engine block of a four cylinder engine. First, we want to create a thermal model of the engine block that represents the thermal masses and the heat transfers by conduction. Then depending on the necessary parameters, we open the CAD file to retrieve the values of these parameters.

Procedure

  1. In Sketch mode, build the following system:

  1. In Submodel mode, all submodels are selected automatically.

  2. Save the system as engine_block.ame.

  3. In Parameter mode, select each component to see the parameters to set: Thermal mass

Heat transfer by conduction

First you have to select the correct type of conduction. From the parameter setting, you need to choose the linear conduction. Figure 12: Linear conduction selection

For linear conduction, the parameters are the contact surface area of the heat exchange and the distance between the two temperature points. Figure 13: Linear conduction parameters

  1. Launch CAD Import from Tools > CAD Import…

  2. Load the CAD file from the File > Import > Part/Assembly menu.

  1. Browse your directories to select the following file cylinder_block.x_t. The file is located in $AME\demo\Platform\1D3DCAE\CADImport\CAD.

  1. Check and set the object density.

In the Simcenter Amesim model you created, the material is aluminum. Before doing any measurements, you need to check that the density is correct. Select the object with the mouse, either in the Scene area or in the Object tree. In the Object inspector, scroll down to the line "material prop.". Then in the field density, set the value to 2700 kg/m3.
