A system Σ:

  • receives or gives energy at its ports,

  • receives energy from, or gives energy to the Sources (whether hidden internally to the submodel or from an external source submodels),

  • stores or restores energy in its Capacitive and Inertial elements,

  • dissipates energy (i.e. transforms it into heat) in its Resistive elements.

In terms of equation, the power balance can be written as:

With:

  • power exchanged at port i (>0 if it goes into the system and <0 if it leaves it),

  • source power variable inside the system,

  • capacitive power of the system,

  • inertial power of the system,

  • resistive power of the system (always positive).
