Using the HPC feature with the Simcenter Amesim GUI

HPC Monitor

The HPC monitor is a tool available in Simcenter Amesim that helps monitor all the runs launched on the HPC machine from the Simcenter Amesim application.

To access the HPC Monitor:

  • Select HPC Monitor from the Simulate menu in Simcenter Amesim.Figure 18: Open HPC Monitor - Simcenter Amesim

Note

From one instance of Simcenter Amesim you can have only one instance of the HPC Monitor. That means if you launch the HPC Monitor directly from Simcenter Amesim or from the Study Manager, it will contain the same details/list of studies. You just access it from different locations.

Study list

The left pane of the HPC Monitor contains the list of studies launched from Simcenter Amesim on the HPC machine.

Note

The list of simulations will remain available on the HPC monitor, even if you close your model, the Simcenter Amesim application itself or if you restart your computer.

For each study, the following information is displayed:

  • The study name.

  • The model name. Hovering the mouse pointer over the study displays a tooltip with the full model path.

  • The date and time at which the study was submitted to the HPC machine for simulation.

  • An icon indicating the status of the HPC simulation.

Results

More details on the selected study are available in the right pane of the HPC Monitor.

Connection status

The icon indicates that the study is connected to the HPC machine. If it is disconnected, the icon is displayed.

The Study details section contains the following information:

  • Status: Indicates the status of the HPC Simulation. It can be PENDING, RUNNING, CANCELLED, COMPLETED or RUN_ERROR.

  • Study progress: Indicates the progress of the HPC simulation. While the study is running, the progress bar indicates the number of runs completed, and the number ongoing. Hovering your mouse cursor over this bar (during or after completion) provides a popup indicating the percentage completed, failed/aborted, or ongoing (see below).

  • Submitted time: Indicates the date and time at which the study was submitted to the HPC machine.

  • Study Type: Indicates the type of study. This can be Monte Carlo, DOE, Optimization or Batch.

  • Study Method: Indicates the algorithm used by the study.

  • Working Dir: Indicates the HPC machine working directory into which the model was copied for the simulation.

Results

Warning

For most schedulers, after a job has finished running, job information is removed from the scheduler's history (immediately or after a short while). Therefore, if the job has already been run (based on the presence of log files), it will be marked as "Completed". Note that it may not reflect the actual job status anymore. For example if a job raised an error or was canceled, it may appear as completed, once the scheduler has finished handling it.

Study progress bar

Depending on the type of study selected, the progress bar popup will provide different information on the study progress.

  • Batch, DOE, Monte Carlo: Completed, Failed/Aborted, Ongoing:

  • Optimization: Completed, Failed/Aborted:

  • For studies from previous versions of Simcenter Amesim, and until any information is available, the status bar remains gray.

Results and files

Once the study simulation is completed on the HPC machine you can download the results. In order to save time as well as disk space, you can choose if you want to download the standard Simcenter Amesim results, the post-processed data or the simulation logs by using the checkboxes under the Results and files section.

  • Standard results: select this option if you want to download the Simcenter Amesim model and its standard results.

  • Post-processed data: select this option if you want to download the data generated by the pre and post-processing scripts. This option retrieves the content of the outfiles folder from the HPC cluster.Warning Only the data available in the outfiles folder will be downloaded. For more information on pre and post-processing scripts, please refer to Pre and post-processing scripts.

  • Simulation logs: select this option to download the simulation logs only. Note that you can download the simulation logs while the simulation is in progress.

Results

Then, click the Download Selection button and select the destination folder in which the model will be downloaded with its simulation logs and results.

A confirmation message is displayed once the download is complete:

Refresh and Cancel

Note

When the HPC Monitor is open, it will automatically refresh all the study simulations available. This means that for each study it will contact the HPC machine and get the details. The automatic refresh frequency is set to 60 seconds.

Use the Refresh button to refresh the active study. This overrides the automatic refresh.

Use the Cancel button to cancel a study simulation once it is submitted to the HPC machine. This option is disabled once the study simulation is completed in the HPC cluster.

Delete

Click this button to delete the selected study from the list. This will also delete all the related files that were submitted to the HPC cluster for the simulation from the HPC machine.
